Artist Bookbinder

The unique hand built journals and sketchbooks at Peel Street Bindery combine the processes of the traditional bookbinder with fresh, contemporary design where contrasting textures, colours and materials are the key elements.

The creation of each journal or sketchbook involves many different stages including:

  • Hand painting and printing the leather and calico for the bookcloth
  • Sourcing genuine historic and vintage wallpapers to use as endpapers and also as inserts and pockets within the journals and sketchbooks
  • Selecting and combining paper of varying weights, textures, finishes and colours, sourced from printers and specialist paper merchants
  • Hand sewing the book blocks using coloured slipping twine on traditional sewing frames
  • Selecting and using leather to create quarter and /or half binding with raised bands to leather spine and ‘ears’
