Kat is an alumna of the University of London, Maria Grey College, where she gained her Certificate in Education.
Later, she studied within the faculty of Art and Design at The Institute of Education – now part of UCL (University College London). In 2000 she was awarded an MA in Museums and Galleries in Education.
Born and bred in the Colne Valley, West Yorkshire, Kat is proud to be a part of generations of her family who lived and worked in Marsden dating back to the 1780s.
It was there in Marsden – at the heart of the textile industry, surrounded by mills, hills, sheep, wool and cloth – that her passion for making and textiles began.
In the late eighties, she attended Goldsmiths College, where she learned to experiment and to take risks with her work. Her passion for printing and painting on to cloth, for experimental dyeing and for classical gobelin tapestry weaving – was ignited and cemented during that time.
For Kat, Goldsmiths was an inimitable, innovative, immersive learning experience, and a springboard and catalyst for all of her work since.
From Goldsmiths, Kat attended Morley College and had the immense good fortune to become a student of Marta Rogoyska – renowned master tapestry weaver. To this day Marta’s teaching continues to impact on Kat – particularly upon her critical approach to her own work.
